The Chinese floating population according to the Census of 1901 amounted to 40,100 of whom 28,329 were in the harbour and the remainder at Aberdeen, Shaukiwan and Stanley.
The loss of Chinese life on shore was not large. About 25 fatalities are known and there were probably a few more. But these do not include the fishing-stake men in the Sha Tau Kok District among whom there must have been a heavy mortality, not yet ascertained.
Relief Measures.
Paragraph 38.
The European and American subscriptions to the Relief Fund now amount to $120,000 and the Chinese to $110,000. A second instalment of subscriptions has been received from residents of Canton and those of Amoy have sent a first instalment of $2,034.
